PostSubject: Re: Band removal booked!!!!   Tue 03 Dec 2013, 6:08 am

Hi Steveelea

I haven't been on this forum for a while....I had my band removed on 7 November - OMG! BEST THING EVER!!! I can eat food without fear of stuck moments, PBs, regurgitating like a cat with a hair ball. God, it really seems like a bad dream now when I look back at the hassles I had.

Your story is the same as mine - I could never quite find the right spot - it was either too loose or too tight which lead to over eating or eating sliders.

I was told by the 2 surgeons I spoke to about band removal about the possible complications. I was told that for a band to sleever the risk of complications increases from 1-2% to 10-12%...the risk of leak is increased due to the scarring on our tummies from the band. The 2 surgeons I spoke to had experienced no leaks or serious complications and the complication rate was a universal/worldwide rate.

We were lied to with our band...they told us the band was reversible...what they should have said was 'the band can be removed but this is what it can do to you'....one of the things the band can do is weaken the oesophageal sphincter at the top of the stomach. If that is weakened then a sleeve won't work because you will get really bad reflux that might not be controlled with medication. If that happens then the only option is a bypass.

That news rocked my world when I heard it. I researched gastric bypass and am happy to have one if I am not compatible for a sleeve.

I see my surgeon for my post-op appointment next week and we will discuss the need for an endoscopy then. I am booked in for a sleeve for 5 March 2014 so I hope I still am able to have it done. My arse is expanding at a rate of knots!!

I haven't really gained much on the scales (1.5 kgs...I actually lost 1 kg in the first week of band removal!) but my body is expanding...bras and undies are getting too small and I am waddling like a pregnant woman!

I'll tell you this though...the band coming out was a hell of a lot easier and less painful than the band going in! happy to chat further if you wish

HI Jo
So pleased you have had it done and it all went smoothly
How is the pain of getting the sleeve compared to the lap band surgery??
I am a real sook and I had a lot of pain with my lap band operation but the port replacements
were easy compared to the main surgery.
Also how did you find your pain/recovery with getting the band out??
Sorry about the pain questions as I said I am a sook
I am so pleased to hear your feedback on what you feel like the sleeve is giving you already.
I can't wait to have this band out now!!!!

Hello  Leanne,
I was recovering when you made your post.
I had my sleeve done on Monday. Band was removed august 7. I am so happy! There is Such  a difference.
You know the pain you get with the band, when you eat or drink too fast or too much at once. NON EXISTENT!  Just a feeling of 'oh, I think I'm done now...' It's amazing.
My surgeon warned me of extra risks etc. especially because at band removal I had a great deal of adhesions,
But everything went smoothly, 2hr op, 3 nights in hospital and all is good. I am so happy!

My one downer was weight gain between ops. This is real, it's unavoidable no matter how sensible you are, so try not to worry about it too much. I gained 14 kg and was told in hospital that they have seen gains up to 25 kg.

Anyway GOODLUCK!

Thanks Tara
Wow there are some scary stories but there are lots of positive ones too.
I just know that I need help and the band is not doing it for me.
I did read about a lady that had revision surgery (from my specialist if I am correct)
and went in to get band out and bypass and passed away a few weeks later.
I think she was healthy and about my age which scares me and is always in the back of my mind.
I do trust my surgeon but it does scare me to hear that has happened to someone.
I am not sure if it was planned bypass or if it was going to be a sleeve but then had to be bypass but scary all the same.

Hiya Leanne,

Yeah there have been a few on here with complications.

Okay sooooooo ... statistically the complication rate is between 1 and 2%. Which is pretty darn good UNLESS you are one of the 2%.

It seems that when it goes wrong it goes very wrong. The people with complications seemed to end up spending ON AVERAGE about 3 months minimum in hospital and often needed extra surgeries.

Here's a link to the Complication threads so you can do your due diligence and have a bit of a read.

Thank you so much Wyld and Tara
I am going to go and have a look at the link that you have added.
I have to say its taken me a while to get to the point where I am looking forward to getting sleeved
but like you both say the band can be and is a nightmare for so many and for me I am well and truly OVER IT!!!!
I wish I had done this at the start but it was still fairly new 4 years ago
Have either of you know of anyone with major complications from the sleeve??
I have read some horror stories but they seem to be overseas so not sure about the success rate here??
Thanks for the welcome guys and I am looking forward to the support and people who understand on this site
Leanne

Hi Steveelea :)

No sleeve story from me, but am waiting to find out when I can get this bloody band out!!!!

I have an appt on the 4th December, so I am hopefully it will be out before Christmas, as I can no longer stand it.

I wish you every success with your sleeve, and I do hope you start up a diary so that I can follow along.

PostSubject: Band removal booked!!!!   Tue 12 Nov 2013, 3:14 am

Hi Guys
I am booked in to get my lapband removed on the 27th of November and waiting 3 months then getting sleeved.
I was banded in November 09 and lost around 45 to 50kg which was great but have put 40kg back on which is not so great.
I have had 3 port replacements and had to let all the fluid in my band out fully due to severe reflux for 6 months.
Have a partial fill at the moment but still get uncomfortable and to be honest....I am over the band. Weather it's my fault or not its not working for me.
I have never felt satisfied with the band and am sick of all the maintenance and hunger.
My surgeon has said its not my fault and that the band does not work for everyone and we have given it a great try but its not for me.
I was so scared to start with but after doing research can't wait!!!!
I have read some horror stories that scare me about things that can go wrong but I am trying to stay positive and know that I have a great group of surgeons that will do the best for me they can.
Most of the horror stories seem to be from people getting the sleeve done in mexico although I haven't researched much from here in Australia.
Also people getting the band to sleeve done in 1 operation.
Anyway would love to hear stories from people who have been banded and then gone to sleeve, positive and not so positive is fine as I want to prepare myself for anything to come.
